Hey Watercolorists and other artists!

Do you ever feel like you’re “blocked” about what to paint next? Here are some quick tips to ponder and a link to an extended article as an option to view. How do you get inspiration for painting? How do you start a watercolor painting? What are the best things to paint with watercolor? Where can I get artistic inspiration?

~ Congratulations ~

Congratulations go out to Prescott Handley for achieving a second place ribbon at the Benton County Fair. Please contact her for further details. Here is her art:


A Transportation/Transformation Show is at Art in Motion in Holdingford from Aug 17- Sept 12. Congratulations to 2 CMW artists for acceptance of their art.

* Anita Hendrickx‘s painting “Big and Little in Two Harbors” has been accepted into that show.

* Sandra Theis has 4 pencil sketch drawings that were accepted into that same show.


~Meetings~

Monday September 13th – Annual Member Meeting – Save the date, mark your calendars and start identifying and bring those items you can donate for the silent sale (Note: Magazines will not be a part of the silent sale though you may bring them to share with others) This event will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church in St. Cloud at 1144 29th Ave N. St. Cloud, MN. *It will begin at 5 PM with check in, registration, silent sale setup and social time. *Dinner will be around 6 PM followed by a meeting and then the silent sale. *Proceeds from the silent sale go to CMW to help support the activities of its members.

The meal will be a potluck so please bring a dish to share. Coffee, water, tea and hot chocolate will be provided.

October 11th – CMW meeting is to be held in person for the first time in over a year. The meeting will be held at the Paramount downstairs in one of the studios. Karen Knutson will be the guest demo artist. More details to follow.

November 8th – There will be a Zoom CMW meeting featuring a demo by Tom Lynch. Social Time begins at 5:45 pm – Meeting begins at 6:15 and the demo begins at 6:30 PM.

~Shows~ (Many of them coming up)

August 2-31 – CMW Centracare Plaza Show: Takedown date is August 31 from 10 AM – 11 AM Note that this is a change in time.

2. August 26th 3-7 PM Paramount Block Party Sale There will be a tent and setup in front of the Paramount with the work of 3 of our CMW artists. They are Pat Spence, Sandra Theis and Paul Tift. Stop by and wish them well.

3. September 13 – October 18th -Art in Motion Show in Holdingford: Note that the theme for this show is focusing on the Monarch butterfly, movement, land and transformation — to signify change. Each artist may have 2 paintings shown. There is a $5 participation fee. There is a 40% commission fee charged by the facility. *Register by August 13th with Ralph Carpenter at ralphcarp@gmail.com. *Jpegs by August 20th to Mary Buhl at mnlady949@gmail.com Information needed is: Title Price Size – Width x Height Medium used Artist sentences (1-2) about the painting or your approach *Drop off date and time is 9 AM – 7 PM on any of these dates: September 10-12th. The staff at Art in Motion will hang the show. * Takedown will be on October 18th – Time to be determined. Sandra Theis will be available to coordinate transportation of art. Watch for more details about this.

October, 2021 CMW Show at Great River Arts in Little Falls : This is a great opportunity to have your art shown in Central MN. You may show 5 paintings and possibly show up to 7 of your art pieces. There is a 40% commission fee. Registration begins September 7th – contact Ralph Carpenter at ralphcarp@gmail.com to sign up. Jpegs are due to Mary by September 12th at mnlady949@gmail.com. Further details to be determined.

November, 2021 – Tentative CMW Show at the Paramount: Details are pending.

October 1-3: UPDATE Show & Sale Announcement: Artists of Minnesota’s (AoM) Annual Conference in St. Cloud Message from Kerry Kupferschmidt, Artists of MN Show Committee

News update for the Artists of MN Fall show

Registration is now open for the Artists of Minnesota fall show and conference in St. Cloud! Dates are October 1- 3 at the Park Event Center, 500 Division St., Waite Park. For those outside the area, block room rates are available at the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn. Room rates apply until Sept. 1st. Registration must be postmarked by Sept. 13th.

All information to register is online at www.artistsofminnesota.org See the “Spring Show” tab for Art by the River. You can pay your fee for membership and show fee ($25) on the same form. Some of the perks of the show include a tour of the St. John’s Bible, a painting activity to be donated locally and many art media for you to enter including oils, pastels, mixed media and watercolors. Our show judge and demo artist is Pat Undis. Two other demos are by Duane Barnhart and Patricia Lintner. All of this will take place Oct. 1-3! See the venue: https://theparkeventcenter.com

If you start by becoming a member, you will receive the August newsletter, which has all the registration info and more about AOM and the demo artists. We are hoping that members of CMW will take the opportunity to join this year, especially since it has been a while since the show has been in St. Cloud. ~Workshop~

Lisa Fertig


Lisa Fertig will return to do a full 3 day workshop titled Color and Design in Watercolor put on from Sept 23 – 25th. We will learn about Building a Landscape step by step, the Foundation for painting to include Design elements and principles plus we will also be able to bring in old paintings to fix and finish. ~Painting Opportunities~

NOTE: Plein Air Painting- on hold pending heat at this time. Painting at the Sartell Community Center on Thursdays from 12:30 – 4 continues.
