Kathy is a self-taught artist who continues to challenge herself with her own art by experimenting with different forms and mediums. Among them are watercolor, drawing and printing. She lives in rural Minnesota where she enjoys drawing out children’s creativity through art and music. Come join us to learn about show preparation and for some fun in drawing out our own creativity through a loose floral demonstration. Learn more about her on her website: https://drawingoutcreativity.com/about/
This member meeting will be held at the Paramount Center for the Arts, 913 W. St Germain Street, St. Cloud, MN 56301, Lower Level, Studio C from 5:30 -8:30 with social time and announcements from 5:30-6:30 and demonstration time from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Light snacks and beverages are provided. See you then!
We are so pleased to have had Kathy with us as she is a frequent student and talented artist in Dan Mondloch’s classes. She fell in love with watercolor when she first saw a painting of pink flamingos in second grade and it took her breath away. She took every art class she could in high school but chose to pursue Horticulture in college. She worked as a mother 6 days a week and a florist one day a week where she could be creative.
Her demo this evening was a front porch in the summer with bushes and flowers. This is from a photo reference she took during a plein air challenge at Battle Lake where she had just 2 hours to paint this out as best she could and she took third place! She loves plein air painting as she is in the moment and the feeling of painting out of doors even if you are dealing with bugs, rain, wind, sunlight that illuminates your paper to be blindingly white, all to get a painting to 90% finished by the time she leaves. She does mark her shadows and stays true to those even as the sun moves and changes the shadows.
Her materials: 140 lb. Arches paper, mostly Winsor brand paints, and her favorite brushes are King Art brushes, Princeton Neptune brushes and a Kolinsky rigger brush, and a continuous water spray bottle (see links below).
Her palette: Winsor Neutral tint (better than Paynes gray?), Olive Green, New Gambouge, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Deep, Cobalt Violet (new), Permanent Rose, Orange/Cadmium Red Light (?), Viridian Green, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Brown (?)
Summer Porch Painting Demo
Her process: Trace photo of house with mechanical pencil onto watercolor paper with light table. Wet both sides of paper with sea sponge and front a second time attach to plexiglass. Wipe excess water off of plexiglass and lightly roll paper towel roll over front side of paper.

Mix neutral tint and yellow areas on butcher tray palette. Use neutral tint in varying diagonal directions to help define the corners and edges of each side of the house and porch.
Use yellow to fill in ground, rough bushes and adds splashes of yellow.
Add bright thick lemon yellow above the green yellow bushes for the tops of flowers and add deep winsor yellow under each yellow blossom while while.
Tries cobalt violet and finds it to be too translucent (good for glazing) and adds permanent rose. Adds more orange to her mixture for the flowers in the pot on the front porch.
Uses olive with neutral and yellow to create blocks of large leaves on the right side.
Winsor neutral tint more dense of the interior of door with negative spaces texture.
Adds more green in darker areas, tightens shaded corner with neutral and neutral plus green for the curtains on the left window.
Gives top edge overhang along roof line more contrast. Gives texture and contrast to roof without filling it in completely.

Adds value under roof of porch and to the left side of the porch stairs.
Sprays underneath her paper again.
Creates a variety of greens with yellows, olive and viridian green mixed with neutral tint. Gently dabs and drags her brush flat to create the leaf hanging directions. Changes each game and bleeds for variety. Allows negative spaces to peek in and out to top right corner
Defines stairs better with darker greens to the right and behind the stairs. Leaves walkway white. Uses cerulean unnatural blue for the potted plant on the porch.
Uses green and neutral to create vertical and diagonal stems under yellow flowers. Adds some fun purple flowers at the bottom of the bushes. Bleeds viridian green onto lawn carefully preserving the yellow sunspots!
Adds fun ultramarine blue to the neutral green in trees and branches and on bush and live edges.
Adds details of plaque and wreath on porch wall.
Uses New Gambouge, orange and some brown to create the tops of the coneflowers, adds in cobalt violet to create flat diagonals left and right on each top for petals.
Uses a Kolinsky rigger brush as stems for the coneflowers, neutral tint only thick for the rails and lays it and dabs first down then up but does not necessarily connect the rails top to bottom.
Adds in stems with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna
Loose Sunflower bonus painting! Sorry no final photo- you had to be there I guess!
