CMW members enjoyed a demonstration of watercolor techniques by Andy Evansen on Monday, November 11 at our member meeting.
Andy emphasized doing value studies before starting a painting, and displayed several of his own during his demo. His value studies include larger shapes with light, medium and dark tones, painted with one color. He does paintings that seem nearly effortless, but a lot of work goes into their planning, drawing and value studies. You can see a gallery of photos of this demonstration here. There is also a link to an article from Watercolor Artist magazine that highlights Andy Evansen’s techniques.
Andy began painting watercolors in the mid 1990’s, is largely self-taught, and has studied with such well-known watercolorists as Skip Lawrence, Eric Weigardt, and Alvaro Castagnet. He served as President of the Minnesota Watercolor Society from 2004-2006 and teaches workshops around the United States. He has studied and given watercolor workshops in other countries and recently traveled to Italy and China for inspiration, to take photos and to paint. His website is andyevansen.com
Free demonstrations during our meetings are some of the many benefits of being a member of Central MN Watercolorists.
Our next meeting is December 9th and it’s our member Holiday Meeting. See our November newsletter for more information.
